I’ve found that it is in the everyday world, where we are most likely to encounter those people who frustrate, irritate and even intend to harm us most, that we can deepen our practice in ways that would take years longer, were we to simply sit on the cushion and meditate.
One of the most effective tools to accomplish this is to use the Eight Verses on Mind Training (Lojong), and Seven-Pointed Mind Training written in 12th Century Tibet, by the monk Cekawa. Through the practice of Lojong, we learn to connect with our world in an unconditionally constructive way, and take full responsibility for our experiences. We learn to generate what is called “Relative Bodhicitta” — that is to say a compassionate heart — and with practice and realisation, aspire toward generating “Ultimate Bodhicitta” or the “Open, Mindful Heart of Compassion and Wisdom”.
This course will focus on this ancient text, and seek to make its practice relevant to the 21st century dharma practitioner.
